If you live in Kentucky and are unable to work due to a medical condition, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits through SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) or SSI (Supplemental Security Income). The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a specific set of criteria to determine whether your condition qualifies. Understanding what qualifies and how to present your case is key to a successful application.
Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.
Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.
SSA’s Listing of Impairments (“Blue Book”)
The SSA maintains a list of recognized medical conditions known as the Listing of Impairments, also called the “Blue Book.” If your diagnosis is on this list and meets the listed severity requirements, you may automatically qualify for benefits.
Some examples of qualifying conditions include:
- Musculoskeletal Disorders: Severe back injuries, joint dysfunction, or arthritis
- Neurological Disorders: Epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, or cerebral palsy
- Cardiovascular Conditions: Heart failure, coronary artery disease, or chronic heart conditions
- Mental Disorders: Depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or PTSD
- Respiratory Conditions: COPD, asthma, or cystic fibrosis
- Cancer: Any type of cancer that is advanced, recurring, or not responding to treatment
- Immune System Disorders: HIV/AIDS, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis
Even if your condition is not specifically listed, you may still qualify if it limits your ability to work significantly and is backed by strong medical evidence.
Severity and Duration Requirements
To qualify in Kentucky, your condition must:
- Last or be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death
- Prevent you from performing substantial gainful activity (SGA)
- Interfere with basic work-related activities, such as standing, sitting, concentrating, or interacting with others
The SSA will also evaluate whether you can return to your previous work or adjust to new work based on your age, education, and experience.
Medical Evidence Is Key
Even if your condition qualifies, you must have strong medical documentation to support your claim, such as:
- Diagnoses from licensed healthcare providers
- Test results (e.g., MRIs, lab reports)
- Treatment plans and prescribed medications
- Physician statements describing how your condition limits your daily life and work activities
The more detailed and consistent your medical records, the stronger your application will be.
